Employment Contracts with Foreign Citizens
Allocation of a Social Security Identification Number
Employers may conclude employment contracts with foreign citizens, even if they do not have a Portuguese Social Security Identification Number (NISS).
The employment contract is the key element for the NISS allocation to a foreign citizen. It is not necessary to include the NISS in the employment contract; therefore, employers do not need to wait for the employee to have the NISS to conclude the employment contract.
Alter the NISS has been allocated by the Social Security services, the employer must communicate the employment relationship through the Social Security Online Service (Segurança Social Direta), ensuring compliance with the respective contributory obligations.
The regularisation of the contributory situation is essential to ensure access to the rights and benefits provided for in the social security system, contributing to the protection of workers and to the sustainability of the system.
