Online request for a Social Security Identification Number (NISS)

Social Security has a new online service available for the request of a Social Security Identification Number (NISS) for foreign citizens or for Portuguese citizens who are not required to have a citizen card.
 
You may apply for the allocation of a Social Security Identification Number (NISS) using the online form available on the Social Security Portal; in the ‘Sou Cidadão’ (I am a Citizen) menu, click on ‘Atribuição de Número de Identificação de Segurança Social (NISS)’ (Allocation of a Social Security Identification Number – NISS)  > Formulário para pedido de Número de Identificação de Segurança Social’ (Social Security Identification Number application form).

Foreign or Portuguese citizens who need to request a Social Security Identification Number (NISS) must complete the online form and attach a scanned copy of their valid ID document.

 
Whenever the NISS application is registered by a legal representative, it is also necessary to attach formal proof of such representation (power of attorney, Declaration of Authorization to Third Parties), as well as the legal representative's valid ID document.
 
The citizen will receive an email confirming the NISS allocation and with information on how he/she may collect the respective document in person at the Social Security Customer Information Services.
